The word ‘holistic’ seems to be increasingly popular as a way of approaching health and, for that matter, life. So what are holistic holidays? The dictionary defines holistic (or holism) as being concerned with wholes or integrated systems rather than with their parts. Or, to put it another way, it’s the theory that living matter comprises organic or unified wholes that are greater than the sum of their parts.

The Healthy Holiday Company – which owns and operates ‘destination yoga’ – has been providing guests with just such an approach to their health and well being since 2003. Our yoga holidays combine the three cornerstones of a holistic holiday: a nutritious diet, physical exercise, and attention to mind and spirit.

Diet

Our meals feature light, innovative food that makes use of the highest quality fresh local fruits, vegetables, poultry and fish (unless the holiday diet is specified as being strictly vegetarian) and other ingredients, all locally sourced and organic when possible. It’s the perfect blend of nutritious and delicious cuisine, and it’s important – if you can – to cut out salt, dairy, coffee, alcohol and wheat too. Alongside targeted exercise and/or yoga classes, it is a formula that encourages deep cellular cleansing and rejuvenation that hundreds of our guests have enjoyed and greatly benefited from.

As we all know, modern lifestyles tend to drive us to consuming foods and drinks that burden our bodies. This leaves them lacking in essential nutrients, taxes their reserves and depletes vitality. A regular focused period of healthy eating is a sensible antidote to this somewhat inevitable pattern. Detoxifying your system, exercising and relaxing allows your body time to restore its vitality. Following such a programme regularly can be the ultimate in preventative healthcare.

Physical exercise

Our yoga holidays offer guests twice daily yoga practice and, during the rest of the day, guests can enjoy other outdoor activities, making full and interesting use of the diverse natural surroundings that each venue offers. Each venue offers its own unique characteristics and you may decide to enjoy a long walk down the beach, go for a hike in the hills, snorkel in the sea or swim a few lengths in the pool.

Exercise leads to heightened aerobic fitness, improved core stability and muscle tone, and accelerated fat burning. And yoga, of course, greatly helps with posture, breathing and meditation.

Mind & spirit

In addition to optimising your physical wellbeing, a further aim of the holiday is to allow time for personal reflection, relaxation and the opportunity to discover the positive effects that a more balanced lifestyle can have on one’s health. Guests on our destination yoga holidays also have the opportunity of benefitting from regular massages by one of our experienced therapists.

We believe that this holistic approach is why so many of our guests return every year, and why we have enjoyed such great reviews.
